The CDC reported 61% of violent deaths in 2022 were by suicide, while 30% were by homicide, according to the American Hospital Association. This means that for every ten violent deaths, more than six were due to suicide—a sobering reminder of the silent struggles so many face. The number of suicides in 2022 reached an all-time high, with 49,449 lives lost, and the reports suggest that the suicide rate was the highest since 1941. Reading this, our hearts ache for families, friends, and communities who are left in the wake of such tragedy. Each number in these statistics is a beloved child, parent, sibling, or friend. Behind every data point is a story of pain, loss, and longing for hope. As Christians, we are called to be present in the valley of the shadow of death, just as our Shepherd walks with us. Scripture never minimizes suffering, but it does promise that we are never abandoned in it.  We are invited to bring our sorrow to God, trusting that He hears every cry. Even in the hardest seasons, we hold onto the hope of Romans 8:38-39: “For I am convinced that neither death nor life… nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” In our grief, we cling to the promise that love is stronger than death, and that in Christ, light will break through the shadows.
