Commemorative fundraiser in memory of Dan Lawler aims to raise awareness and support suicide prevention

A commemorative fundraiser was organized to honor the life of Dan Lawler, a beloved first responder known for his warmth, humor, and lasting impact on his community. The event, described as a ride, aimed to both remember Dan and raise crucial funds for suicide prevention efforts. Lawler, affectionately called “Flounder,” is remembered not only for his service but for the way he uplifted those around him. The fundraiser serves as a response to the ongoing mental health crisis among first responders—an issue that often goes unseen until it is too late. Reading about this initiative, I am struck by the power of community in the face of loss. Fundraisers like these are more than opportunities to give financially; they are public acknowledgments that every life matters and that the pain of suicide ripples far beyond the individual. By gathering in Dan’s name, the community not only honors his memory but also brings visibility to the silent struggles many endure. The ride was a symbol of solidarity and a commitment to breaking the stigma that so often keeps people from seeking help.  In John 16:33 (NIV), Jesus tells us, “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” While loss and struggle are realities of our fallen world, our hope is anchored in Christ’s victory—a hope we extend to others through love, advocacy, and remembrance. May this fundraiser not only honor Dan Lawler’s legacy but inspire ongoing action, compassion, and hope for all who struggle in silence.
