Oklahoma now ranks among the top 10 states for suicide rates in the nation, with 21.4 deaths per 100,000 people—far above the national average of 14 per 100,000. In 2022 alone, 857 Oklahomans lost their lives to suicide, and the rate has surged by nearly 49% over the past two decades.  Of particular interest is the connection made between poor broadband connections and suicide. Reading these figures, our hearts ache for every family shattered by an unexpected goodbye. The rising rates remind us that despair can touch any home, church, or school, regardless of background. It’s a crisis that calls us not just to awareness, but to action—rooted in compassion, prayer, and the hope we find in Christ. As followers of Jesus, we are called to be “the light of the world” (Matthew 5:14), shining hope into the darkest valleys. When the pain of loss feels overwhelming, Scripture offers comfort and perspective.  As Oklahoma faces this crisis, let’s lift one another up in prayer and practical love. Reach out to those who seem withdrawn, listen without judgment, and remind them they are not alone. In the face of rising numbers, may we hold fast to the hope of Romans 8:38-39—that nothing, not even death, can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. If you or someone you know is struggling, please seek help. The darkness is real, but so is the light of Christ—and together, we can carry hope into every hurting heart.
