A grieving parent shared the heartbreaking story of losing their daughter to suicide, directly linked to relentless online bullying. This column highlights not only the devastating impact of cyberbullying but also points to the urgent need for practical solutions and compassionate community response. The article’s summary is all too familiar for many families: a young life lost to the cruelty of words and actions online, while those around her struggled to keep pace with the rapid, often invisible, escalation of harm. The pain of losing a child in this way is compounded by the knowledge that her suffering was magnified in the digital world—a space that should have been safe, but became a source of torment. From a Christian perspective, we must acknowledge the reality of bullying, even within the stories of Scripture. Hannah, David, and Daniel all faced ridicule and exclusion, but each turned to God for strength and hope. Paul’s words in 2 Corinthians 13:11 (NRSV) offer another vision for how we might respond as a faith community: “Put things in order, listen to my appeal, agree with one another, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you.” If we are to honor the memory of those lost, we must become proactive—creating safe spaces, equipping youth and adults to stand against online harassment, and offering real-time support for those in distress. In our grief, God’s presence is our comfort. And in our action, we extend that comfort to others, working together to prevent another precious life from being lost to the shadows of online bullying.
