Governor Mike DeWine has unveiled a specialized license plate in Ohio to spread awareness about the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline and support suicide prevention efforts. This initiative was signed into law through Senate Bill 163 and was championed by the Ohio Suicide Prevention Foundation after being approached by Chip and Debbie McClintock, who had lost two loved ones to suicide. The new license plates will feature the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline logo, creating a visible reminder that help is always available. For each plate sold, $10 will go directly to the Ohio Suicide Prevention Foundation, which will use these funds to provide training and resources to prevent suicide in communities across Ohio. As Christians, we’re called to be beacons of hope in a world that often feels overwhelmed by darkness. The creation of these license plates represents more than just awareness. Each plate serves as a mobile message that no one needs to face their struggles alone. The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline provides 24/7, free and confidential support to anyone experiencing mental health-related distress, including thoughts of suicide, mental health or substance use crisis, or any other kind of emotional distress. Scripture reminds us in Isaiah 41:10 offers a powerful reminder: “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” In many ways, the 988 service and these awareness plates embody this promise—a tangible reminder that help is available and no one needs to face their darkest moments alone. May all other states follow Ohio’s lead.
