Franciscan Health Free Suicide Prevention Courses Offer Hope and Support

Franciscan Health is partnering with local presenters to offer free suicide prevention courses, a practical step that puts life saving education into the hands of ordinary people. News like this matters because suicide prevention is not only a clinical issue but also a community one, and the more people who learn to notice warning signs and respond with care, the more likely someone in pain is to be reached in time. What stands out to me is the quiet strength of prevention. Free courses do not erase grief, but they can equip a neighbor, church member, teacher, or friend to speak up, listen well, and connect someone to help. That kind of readiness reflects Christian love in action: not waiting until a crisis becomes irreversible, but entering into suffering early with wisdom and compassion. Scripture gives language for this kind of presence.  Proverbs 24:11 NIV says, “Rescue those being led away to death; hold back those staggering toward slaughter.” While this verse is broader than mental health alone, its call to intervene before destruction is deeply relevant to suicide prevention. And Psalm 34:18 NIV reminds us, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” That promise matters because people at risk often feel unseen, but God is near, and his people are called to be near as well. For families walking through suicide loss, prevention efforts can stir both gratitude and sorrow. Gratitude, because resources exist. Sorrow, because they are needed. Yet Christian hope does not deny either reality. It says healing can begin with honest conversation, trained support, and the steady presence of people who refuse to turn away from pain.

The Christian Association for Survivors of Suicide Loss, Inc. (suicideloss.org) provides support to those who have lost a loved one to suicide through support groups and church support. If you are in crisis, dial 988 or 911 for assistance.
