How Faith Can Guide Us Through Academic Pressure

We noticed in this item today that Nigeria’s Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board (JAMB) acknowledged a “glitch” in their 2025 examination system amid concerningly low pass rates. These high-stakes examinations create unbearable stress for children and teenagers and, in this case, at least one death by suicide. The pressure to perform well on a single test that determines a person’s entire academic future can lead to devastating consequences for mental health (it’s also a sobering reality that worldwide, suicide by poison is actually more common than by firearm, particularly in regions where agricultural chemicals are readily accessible). As Christians, we must recognize these academic pressures as potential spiritual crises. When we place our entire worth in performance, we’ve lost sight of the value God sees in us.  Jesus himself to this in Matthew 11:28-30: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” He was addressing a group of people who were “measured” by the tests set up by the religious leaders of their day based on traditions of men, rather than by their value to God.  May we all let this beautiful invitation remind us that our value comes not from test scores but from being beloved children of God.
