As I perused the web, this item caught my attention today. The digital world claimed another precious life too soon. Misha Agarwal, a 25-year-old law student and content creator, took her own life on April 24, just days before her birthday, after becoming distraught over having fewer Instagram followers. Her sister shared heartbreaking truth that Misha had “built her world around Instagram” with the singular goal of reaching one million followers. When those numbers began to drop, she felt “worthless” despite having a law degree and preparing for judicial exams. What strikes me most profoundly about this tragedy is how it reveals our culture’s notion about what makes us as humans valueable focuses on the externals in our lives, and not the fact that we are created by God in his image. As Genesis 1:27 tells us, “So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them” (NIV). This is who we are, and God adds “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago” (Ephesians 2:10, NLT). Our number of followers is not our value.
