The Lexington VA suicide prevention team is opening awareness month with a public event at North Lime Donuts in Lexington on Friday, September 4, from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the Loudon Avenue location, with an information and resource table also available at the Clays Mill site. This kind of outreach matters because prevention is not only about crisis response but also about meeting people in ordinary places with compassion, information, and a clear path to help. The setting itself is meaningful. A donut shop is a familiar, low-pressure place, which can make hard conversations feel more human and less clinical. That is often where healing begins: not in a dramatic moment, but in a simple encounter where someone feels seen. Events like this remind the church that awareness is not passive sympathy; it is active presence. For Christians, suicide loss and suicide prevention both call for tenderness, truth, and hope. Matthew 5:4 says, “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted” (NIV). Jesus does not minimize sorrow; he meets it with blessing and comfort. And 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 says God is “the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort” who comforts us so we can comfort others (NIV). That is a powerful picture for suicide loss communities: receiving comfort and becoming a place of comfort for someone else. A prevention month event also challenges believers to speak openly about mental health without shame. The church should be a place where pain can be named, support can be offered, and help is encouraged quickly. If this story stirs grief, fear, or personal memories, let it be a reminder that reaching out is an act of courage, not weakness. Help, prayer, and community all matter. The hope of the gospel is not that suffering is ignored, but that no suffering is beyond God’s care.
