Opioid overdoses and suicide are now the main causes of death for construction workers—a sobering reality that highlights a crisis in this vital industry. The article reports that construction workers are six times more likely to die by suicide than from job-related accidents, and mental health struggles are compounded by substance abuse issues like opioid addiction. Reading this, I am struck by how easily these hard realities can be overlooked behind the scenes of our nation’s progress. The construction sector, known for its physical risks, now faces a hidden epidemic. Long hours, job stress, and a culture that often discourages vulnerability combine to make mental health struggles all too common. The stigma around asking for help remains strong, especially among men, who make up most of the workforce and are statistically more likely to die by suicide. As a Christian, these statistics call me to compassion and action. We must remember that behind every number is a person created in God’s image, deeply loved and never forgotten by our Savior. The burdens that construction workers carry—whether physical, emotional, or spiritual—are not meant to be borne alone. Scripture does not shy away from the reality of suffering. God’s presence is with those who feel isolated, overwhelmed, or hopeless. In moments when despair feels like the only option, we are reminded that nothing “will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:39, NIV). Let us commit to being a community that notices, prays, and acts. Whether it’s a word of encouragement, an offer to listen, or helping someone connect with professional support, small acts of kindness can save lives. May we be the hands and feet of Christ to those at risk, embodying the hope and love that only He can give.
