Faith leaders in the UK have called for a national day of prayer ahead of Parliament’s vote on new assisted suicide bills. The Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill, progressing through the House of Commons, would allow terminally ill adults to request assistance in ending their lives, provided strict safeguards are met. This significant legislative moment has stirred deep emotions and prompted many to seek God’s wisdom and comfort. The news reminds us that debates around assisted suicide are not just political or medical—they are profoundly spiritual. The proposed law would require that patients are terminally ill, mentally competent, and subject to multiple checks by doctors and the courts. Yet, as Christians, we recognize that every human life is a sacred gift from God. Our response must be rooted in compassion, truth, and hope. In moments like these, we are called to pray for our leaders, for those facing terminal illness, and for their loved ones. Scripture urges us, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him” (James 1:5). As Parliament considers this bill, we pray for wisdom and discernment, trusting that God hears our cries. Our calling is to walk alongside the grieving, the sick, and the vulnerable—not with easy answers, but with steadfast love. Let us all participate in prayer, asking God to guide us all toward compassion and justice. May we be a voice for hope, affirming the value of every life, and trusting that even in our darkest valleys, God’s light can lead us forward.
