Utah State University is shining a light on suicide prevention by encouraging people to know the warning signs and find the words to start a lifesaving conversation. USU’s “Know the Signs, Find the Words” message fits a simple truth: many people do not need a perfect speech, only a caring presence that notices pain and responds with courage. USU’s prevention effort highlights common warning signs such as talking about hopelessness, withdrawing from friends and family, big mood changes, reckless behavior, or giving away possessions. That practical guidance matters because suffering often hides behind ordinary routines, and compassion begins when we pay attention instead of assuming someone is fine. The university also emphasizes direct questions, listening without judgment, and connecting a person to help, which is a wise and humble approach. For Christians, this kind of care reflects the heart of Christ, who drew near to the weary and the wounded. In the context of suicide prevention, we do not carry pain by ourselves; we step in, stay present, and help bear the weight together. Proverbs 12:25 (NIV) reminds us, “Anxiety weighs down the heart, but a kind word cheers it up.” Sometimes the kind word is not polished, just honest: “I’m glad you told me. You matter. Let’s get help together.” God is close to the crushed and the tired. In Christian community, prevention is not only a public health issue; it is a ministry of presence, listening, and hope. If this article stirs grief, fear, or memories of loss, may it also serve as a reminder that speaking up can save a life. The church is called to notice, to ask, to stay, and to point hurting hearts toward help and toward the God who sees them.

The Christian Association for Survivors of Suicide Loss, Inc. (suicideloss.org) provides support to those who have lost a loved one to suicide through support groups and church support. If you are in crisis, dial 988 or 911 for assistance.
