Detailed map of North America featuring pushpins highlighting regions in Mexico and the US.

Rrecent data highlights which states are turning most to the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Since its launch in July 2022, the 988 number has provided a lifeline for millions, offering immediate help for those facing mental health and suicide crises. The service is available nationwide, but usage rates vary significantly by state. According to the latest research, Alaska, Vermont, and New York have the highest contact rates to the 988 hotline in 2024, with Alaska leading at 45.3 contacts per 1,000 people, followed by Vermont at 40.2 and New York at 38.8. On the other hand, Delaware, Alabama, and Florida report the lowest rates of use, with Delaware at just 12.5 contacts per 1,000 people. Nationally, the contact rate stands at 23.7 per 1,000 people in 2024, and the 988 system has fielded more than 16.3 million calls, texts, and chats since its inception. These numbers reflect both the growing mental health crisis in America and the gradual increase in awareness and trust in the 988 system. However, the uneven use across states suggests disparities in mental health outreach, stigma, or access to supportive resources. As Christians, this calls us to greater compassion and advocacy for those suffering in silence. When we see these statistics, we are called not to despair, but to action—praying for those in mental anguish, supporting local efforts, and breaking down stigma in our communities.  In Isaiah 41:10 (KJV), God promises, “Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee.” May we be vessels of that help, bringing hope and connection to those in crisis.
