Jay’s Barbershop in Hamburg, New York, is hosting its second annual 24-hour haircutting marathon to raise funds and awareness for suicide prevention. The event, which runs from 10 a.m. Saturday, July 18, until 10 a.m. Sunday, July 19, has expanded into a full community festival featuring food trucks, local vendors, raffles, and carnival games.

Owner Jason Lape and four other barbers are cutting hair, providing razor shaves, and offering beard trims, with all proceeds benefiting the Suicide Prevention Coalition of Erie County. Last year, the marathon raised $12,000, and this year’s goal is at least $16,000.

This initiative began as a way to honor the memory of Evan Granville, a customer who died by suicide three years ago, transforming personal tragedy into a force for community healing. As barbers work through the night, they create a unique space for connection, reminding us that simple acts of service can carry profound spiritual weight.

In a world where isolation often fuels despair, this marathon demonstrates how the church and community can actively “weep with those who weep” (Romans 12:15, NIV) while offering tangible hope. Additionally, Jesus declares in Matthew 5:4, “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted” (NIV), offering assurance that our grief is seen and that divine comfort is available.

Finally, Isaiah 41:10 encourages us with, “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand” (NIV), a vital reminder that God’s strength sustains us when we feel weak.

Events like this haircutting marathon embody the biblical call to love our neighbors practically. By raising funds for suicide prevention, these barbers are participating in God’s work of protecting life and fostering hope.
