18 Holes for Vito Veteran Suicide Awareness Golf Event Christian Reflection

The third annual “18 Holes for Vito” golf outing is scheduled to honor veterans and raise critical awareness about suicide prevention within the military community. This event, set for July 25 at Fox Hollow, specifically aims to highlight the invisible wounds of war, such as PTSD, which often drive veterans toward the devastating choice of suicide. The initiative underscores a heartbreaking reality: approximately 22 veterans lose their battle to suicide every single day, a statistic that demands our urgent attention and compassionate action. Watching communities gather to support one another through a shared activity like golf offers a powerful reminder that we are not meant to carry our burdens alone. For those grieving a veteran lost to suicide, the pain is compounded by the silence and stigma that often surround mental health struggles in military culture. Yet, events like “18 Holes for Vito” break that silence, creating a safe space where healing can begin and where the message “not all wounds are visible” is honored with dignity. As Christians, we are called to be the hands and feet of Jesus for those in the depths of despair, offering the hope that no suffering is beyond God’s reach. The Bible assures us that God is close to the brokenhearted and rescues those who are crushed in spirit. This promise is not merely a future hope but a present reality for veterans struggling with PTSD and the shadow of suicide. Furthermore, Jesus invites us to find rest in Him, declaring in Matthew 11:28 (NIV), “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” This rest is essential for those overwhelmed by the weight of trauma and the grief of loss. We must also remember that our strength is found in God, not in our ability to endure alone. Isaiah 40:31 (NIV) reminds us, “But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” As we support initiatives like “18 Holes for Vito,” we participate in God’s work of renewing strength for the weary and bringing hope to the broken. Let us stand with our veteran brothers and sisters, ensuring they know that in Christ, there is no shame in seeking help and no despair that cannot be overcome.
